Popps Packing offers residencies for emerging and mid-career artists interested in an immersive experience in Detroit. We welcome artists working in all disciplines and media. We also welcome artists with families and small groups
Popps packing is a fluid space and we offer artists many different environments to work in. In addition to the communal studios, we offer the various structures and empty lots around the Popps compound as sites for exploration. Artists have access to the Popps workhop (includes table saw, compound miter saw, oxy/acetylene torch, drill press, bench grinder, belt/disc sander, various power and hand tools), our gardens, and the Popps Mobile Sauna. We provide bikes for guests to use during their stay. (Public transportation is questionable in Detroit, so we recommend a rental car, or in the warmer months, a bicycle).
In addition to the housing, studios and facilities offered here at Popps, we also connect residents to our large network of local artists, resources, and organizational and institutional partners through informal gatherings, open studios, exhibitions and performances.
An exhibition, artist talk, workshop, performance or other form of public engagement is strongly encouraged, but not required.
Residencies are usually for 1-2 months and applications are reviewed on ongoing basis. We plan about 6-12 months in advance so if you’re interested in a residency in the spring or summer, apply by November and for fall /winter apply by March.
